Where to Start
There is no definitive answer to this but there are some clear pointers that might be helpful.
Quality Over Quantity
This isn't a race. It's not about tallying up the most books read, MOOCs completed, or work experiences undertaken, as you won't actually list every single activity you've done. What matters is how these activities have enhanced you as a student, what you've discovered, and how your perspectives have evolved through your involvement. It should demonstrate growth beyond the curriculum, so if your super curricular activities relate to a curriculum subject, explore beyond classroom learning, or if they aren't tied to a subject, venture beyond the obvious or expected paths.
Demonstrate Depth
Avoid switching from one subject to another without delving deeply. Choose a topic that intrigues you and pursue it. After finishing one activity, think about what else you might want to learn or explore something you didn't fully grasp or that is referenced in the activity and requires further understanding. Pick a thread and follow it.
Mix and Match
It is a good idea you mix and match your activities. How many of each you do depends on the availability of resources and your time commitments. It doesn't have to end when you've completed your university application, it's a great habit to get into, extending your knowledge and encouraging your passion.
Set a Target
If you are engaging in super curricular activities as part of your school week, we suggest aiming to complete a minimum number of tasks to ensure comprehensive subject coverage and exploration through various activity types. You might consider setting a goal of one MOOC each term, a podcast or video weekly, and a book monthly, among other activities. However, as you become more interested in the topic, you might find yourself doing more, and that's perfectly okay!
Have Fun!
Engaging in super curricular activities is valuable, beneficial, and rewarding if it reflects your passion, love, or interest in a subject or career. However, when it comes to a personal statement, it's a relatively concise document so you might not be able to include an extensive amount of super curricular work. The real pleasure lies in going beyond the necessary work and exploring purely for enjoyment.
